About BPL Lion

The Belleville Public Library has been in existence for over 100 years and is the jewel of Washington Avenue which runs the course of the Township of Belleville, NJ between Nutley and Newark.

It serves a diverse population of approximately 36,000 residents and is located less than 10 minutes from Essex County’s beautiful Branch Brook Park.

The library provides a host of programs and activities for all ages and serves a variety of cultures. We provide access to a collection of about 36,000 books and other materials for leisure as well as personal edification.

The library is always seeking to improve our services and facilities to better serve the Community of Belleville.

Historic Carnegie Building, Modern Charm

The Carnegie Building in which it now resides has undergone modifications over the years to modernize its appearance, while efforts have been made to preserve elements of its original character. This includes maintaining the original exterior facade within the building, creating a grand focal point in the Conservatory, where more formal functions are held.

On the ground level are the beautifully redesigned Children’s Department, Administrative offices, Circulation Department, our Teen Center.

Adult Reading Room: A Serene Escape

The Adult Reading Room is located on the library’s second floor, between the print collection and the Conservatory. The serene environment is conducive to study, research, and quiet reading.

Children’s Department: A Wonderland for Little Learners

The Children’s Department has been redesigned as a bright, engaging space for Belleville’s youngest patrons. Shelving is within easy reach of small hands, encouraging independent exploration and early literacy. The space supports imaginative play and age-appropriate activities that promote learning and curiosity.

Teen Center: Where Future Adults Thrive

The Belleville Public Library’s Teen Center is dedicated to Belleville’s teens. The space offers activities and resources designed specifically for this age group. Teens can relax with friends after school, play games, work on assignments, or socialize in a supervised, welcoming environment.

The Teen Center provides a comfortable alternative space where teens can spend time constructively and safely.

Technology & Printing Services

The library provides public access to computers and free Wi-Fi for personal laptops and mobile devices. In the adult area, laptops are used to allow flexible seating and comfortable use throughout the Adult Reading Room.

Public printing is available in both color and black and white. The library also supports printing from home and personal devices through Princh.
